1. What is the difference between your Standard
Covers and your Archival Covers? Do I need archival quality?
The materials used in the production of a book jacket cover
determine whether it is archival or non-archival (standard).
All the components used to make Brodart’s archival
book jacket covers (film, paper, and adhesive) are acid-free.
Even through all the films and paper used in our covers
are acid-free in their original state, the adhesive used
in the production of the cover will determine if the finished
product will be archival or standard. A polyvinyl acetate
adhesive is used for archival covers and a hot melt adhesive
is used for standard covers.
Archival covers are recommended for long term protection
of rare, special, first editions or private book collections.
Standard or regular book jacket covers provide effective
protection for a heavily circulated general library collection.

2. How
do I know which cover to choose?
Brodart offers a wide assortment of book jacket covers.
Each style will protect your book cover and keep it in
“like new” condition for many years, but may
be applied in a different manner. Refer to our Book Jacket
Cover Selection Guide to choose the cover that is right
for you!

3. What
is the advantage of center slit cover versus an open edge
cover?
Adjustable, open-edge book jacket covers have one permanently
sealed edge along the length of the cover and the opposite
edge is open to allow for insertion of the dust jacket
during application. These covers are usually available
in five or six popular sizes that are purchased at least
one inch larger than the book and then folded (or adjusted)
to fit the dust jacket.
Center-slit, exact-sized book jacket
covers are permanently sealed along both lengths of the
cover and the liner is center-scored to allow insertion
of the dust jacket at the middle. These covers are available
in a variety of book sizes and are purchased by size to
provide an exact fit with reduced (or no) folding or adjusting
during application.
Selection of a cover style depends
on the libraries requirements, storage space and staff
preference. Adjustable covers are ideal for libraries
that have limited storage space because only a few sizes
need to be stocked to fit a variety of books; but more
staff time is needed to apply the covers. Exact-sized
covers are easier and faster to apply because they require
minimal folding and adjustment, but more storage space
is needed to keep all the cover sizes in stock.

4. I
ordered book jacket covers in the past, but do not remember
which ones they are. How do I know which # to order?
All our book jacket covers (except for the archival styles)
have the name and catalog number on the paper backing
of each jacket style.

5. How
do I determine what size I need to order?
Measure the height of the dust jacket.
· For exact sized dust jacket covers, select the
closest cover height increment available.
Example: 8 ¾”
high for a 8 ¾” dust jacket. If the exact
cover size is not available, choose the next larger size.
· For adjustable book jacket covers, select a size
up to 1” larger than the dust jacket height. Larger
covers can be folded to fit smaller books.
· Oversized type books may require covers that
are longer than standard. Long and Extra Long covers are
available in selected styles. Refer to our full-line catalog
to specific styles.

6. What
is the difference between Polyester and Polypropylene?
Polyester is a very strong film with high internal strength
and good folding qualities; it will withstand heavy use
and is very hard to puncture or tear. Polyester is available
in 1.5-mil, 2-mil, or 4-mil thickness.
Polypropylene is a softer, more flexible
and conformable material, and is offered in a 2.5-mil
thickness. Polypropylene is more economical than polyester,
but does not offer the same strength or durability.

7. Do
I need a bone folder to apply my BJC’s?
A bone folder or squeegee is a great tool to use for folding
and creasing covers and films during application.

to top
8. Do
I need to attach my BJC’s with tape?
Attaching or filament tape may be used to secure the book
jacket cover to the book. This application is not recommended
for archival protection.

9. Is there a minimum quantity I must
purchase?
Mininum order quantity is 25 of each size and style. Assortment
packages are available on most styles.
