This is the tape that I've been using for the last 8 years for book repairs at our library. It stretches rather than tearing, is repositionable (if you do it immediately and are careful removing it), it does melt slightly if you are using a Cover One machine to reset the spine but I haven't found any kind that doesn't melt yet. This has been one of my staples for book repair for ages and I highly recommend it for everything from page repair (for kid's books) to wings and spine covers (everything from comics to nonfiction)
